Local Resources for Disaster Preparation
TRAININGS
CERT
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. https://eugene-cert.com/
HAM Radio Operator
Emerald Amaneur Radio Society periodically provides trainings for Entry-level (Technician) license.
A major earthquake would topple cell towers and damage land lines. Emergency communication will be performed by licensed ham radio operators.
First Aid, CPR, AED, etc.
The Southwest Oregon Chapter of the American Red Cross offers in-person and on-line classes. (Click on “Training & Certification”.)
EMERGENCY ALERTS
Sign up to receive alerts from Lane County fire, police, and other emergency response agencies in the event of severe weather, fire, flooding, hazardous materials, need for immediate evacuation, civil danger, local area emergencies, and missing personsAlerts are to residents in the event of severe weather, fire, flooding, hazardous materials, need for immediate evacuation, civil danger, local area emergencies, and missing persons.
The ShakeAlerts detects earthquakes that have already begun, offering seconds of advance warning that allow people and systems to take actions to protect life and property from destructive shaking. Alerts are sent through the Wireless Emergency Alert System automatically to most cell phones (just like an AMBER Alert). Sign-up is not required and no action needs to be taken other than enabling emergency alerts on your cell phone.

Balancing Fire Safety and a Healthy Forest in the Spencer Butte Area
Our area’s forest, open space, and wildlife make this a wonderful place to live. However, these same features put our homes and properties at high fire risk during the dry season. Luckily, making our properties more fire-resistant and helping the health of the forest are goals that complement and enhance each other.
The volume of wildfire prevention resources on the Internet can be overwhelming. SBNA has put together several documents to help you get started and selected other resources neighbors have found especially helpful, and compiled additional resources.
If you are just getting started…
- Start with this: Balancing Fire Safety and a Healthy Forest in the Spencer Butte Area [by SBNA]
What to plant and what to remove:
- What to plant – Fire Resistant and Wildlife Friendly Trees and Shrubs for the Spencer Butte Area [by SBNA]
- What to remove – Highly-Flammable Plants Common in the Spencer Butte Area [by SBNA]
Especially helpful resources produced by others:
- Fire Resistant Plants for Home Landscapes – [OSU Extension Service]
- Other SBNA Recommended Resources for Balancing Wildfire Risk Reduction and a Healthy Forest
Oregon Wildfire Risk Map
The updated Oregon Wildfire Risk Map was released January 7, 2025.
All of the Spencer Butte area is classified as “Low” or “Moderate” risk.
ODF Prescribed Fire Liability Program
A new ODF (Oregon Department of Forestry) program provides liability coverage for prescribed fires and cultural burns in Lane County and throughout Oregon.
Watch Duty app, https://www.watchduty.org
Maps wildfires and their status in real-time. Notifications can be set by county.
Several SBNA members have found Watch Duty to be the best way to quickly find about wildfire in our area and to get notifications of nearby fires.
ShakeAlert
ShakeAlert® sends out a cell phone alert as soon as the beginning of an earthquake is detected in Oregon, Washington, or California. The alert could give you enough time to climb down from a ladder, turn off a chain saw, get under a table before the shaking arrives reaches you.
Outdoor Pile Burning
There were already several grass fires in the Eugene/Springfield area last month. Before you burn, think about wildfire and grass fire prevention, even at this time of year.
Lane County Alert Me
Register your cell phone to receive Lane County Emergency Alerts. You can set what you want to receive alerts about, e.g. evacuation orders, weather, etc.
