What Else is Happening in the Neighborhood?
Spencer Butte House Concerts – For several summers A-Squared Productions has hosted outdoor and indoor house concerts at the home of Andrea Halliday and Anice Thigpen at 32111 Fox Hollow Road. If you want to receive information about their concerts and organizations they support you can sign up for their newsletter at www.asquaredarts.com. Also watch for announcements in the SBNA email bulletin the first of each month.
Abbelone Vineyards – located on Christensen Road, off Fox Hollow Road. They have winter and summer tasting hours and can host private events in their courtyard.
Fox Springs Farm – Open seasonally April-October offering nursery plant starts, products and local fresh produce. They have a unique historic barn and are located at 28810 on lower Fox Hollow Road.
The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church – a note about the new owners of this property on McBeth Road. Markus and Laura Lay have lived in the Spencer Creek community for almost 50 years. Markus works locally in the fire service and Laura is a nurse. They have raised their family in this community and Laura began attending the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church back in the 80’s. They were later married by Pastor Dinsmore. When Laura was a little girl her family would bring her grandmother to church and she always called it the “little church in the wildwood”. It has always been a special place for many.
The church sadly held their last service, Easter of 2023. After hearing about the church’s plan to sell, the Lays felt called to try and purchase the church to preserve the beauty and history of the property and to continue its use for the community well into the future.
They are currently working on finishing renovations and updates to the house, and paint and plaster projects in the church building. They hope to have things finished soon and look forward to making the space available to the community later this spring, as Wildwood chapel & gathering place (credit to Laura’s late grandmother). Feel free to reach out to them if you have questions or stop and say hi if you see them there working! wildwoodgatherings@gmail.com
Local Neighborhood Groups: SBNA is divided into 10 local groups to facilitate contact with nearby neighbors (e.g., your dog is at my house; a cougar is headed for your chickens), help make properties more fire resistant, prepare for disasters (such as wildfires, earthquakes, ice storms, a tree falling on your house), or just to find help getting groceries or a ride. They are a pleasant way to get to know your neighbors.
New SBNA Website: The overall framework for a new SBNA website is complete and a workgroup is in the process of organizing and adding content. The launch will be announced on the SBNA e-mail list. Many thanks to Mike Speiser and Sarah MacArthur for establishing, enhancing and maintaining the “old” website, which served us so well for many years.
SBNA Facebook Page: Members can contribute information on neighborhood issues, (e.g. Fox Hollow is blocked by fallen trees, roads are icy, etc.), questions, and opportunities. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ sbna.net.
SBNA Monthly Bulletin Board: A notice board for community members to advertise or inquire about basic services in our neighborhood. It is also a good venue for inviting neighbors to join in fun outings or to meet for activities of common interest.
Rural Fire Protection: Eugene Rural Fire Protection District #1 consists of 5 elected (unpaid) Board of Directors who meet monthly to assure our ongoing contract for emergency response provided by Eugene Springfield Fire & EMS. This Eugene Fire District serves all of south Willamette Street and Fox Hollow Road from Cline Road to Bill’s Bench. erfpd1.specialdistrict.org
The Lane Fire Authority covers lower Fox Hollow Road and McBeth Road. lanefire.org
Neighborhood Security: If you see something, say something … but also use your cell phone to notify neighbors and photograph it, whether it is a speeding car or a car or person that doesn’t belong somewhere, especially if you can get the license plate. This will aid the sheriff if a criminal incident needs to be reported.
